Recently, retired NYPD Detective Ike Ilkiw gave a presentation to the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society of Mysteries of Woodhaven.

Dozens of people listened as he spoke about Mae West and examined whether she lived in the area. West, who was an actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter and comedian, did call Woodhaven home at one point in her life.

Ilkiw’s presentation also featured a discussion on Collyer Mansions conditions, otherwise known as hoarding conditions. In the city, first responders are aware of the term because a space filled with items can have various potential dangers.

The next Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 24, from 1pm – 3pm at the Emanuel United Church of Christ (91st Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard).
